This is the perfect beginner drop spindle as it's a simple top whorl spindle with a good amount of space under the whorl for storing your yarn, and it has a nice weight to it at 65 grams. It's weighty enough to get a long stable spin, and not so light that you won't get enough momentum. But it's also not too heavy, making it easier to maneuver and ensuring you don't break your yarn and drop your spindle as often.

HOW IT'S MADE

Ashford was founded in 1934 by Walter Ashford in Christchurch, New Zealand. Today, it is run by Walter's grandson James Ashford and his husband Dave. The Ashford factory is now located outside of Christchurch, and makes high quality spinning and weaving tools from fine beech hardwood, as well as combed fibre including mulesing-free NZ Corriedale and Merino.
