-
Coarse (32 gauge): Barbs on three sides. Good for making the bulk of a 3D piece and attaching pieces well. Not suitable for fine detail work.
-
Star (38 gauge): Barbs on four sides. Great all-round needle, good for finer work and finer wools as well as bulky sculpting work.

Reverse (40 gauge): Barbs go in opposite direction which results in fibre being pulled out. Useful to create a fluffy finish on well felted pieces.
-
Spiral (36 gauge): Needles are twisted which makes felting faster while reducing the surface holes other needles make.
HOW IT'S MADE
Ashford was founded in 1934 by Walter Ashford in Christchurch, New Zealand. Today, it is run by Walter's grandson James Ashford and his husband Dave. The Ashford factory is now located outside of Christchurch, and makes high quality spinning and weaving tools from fine beech hardwood, as well as combed fibre including mulesing-free NZ Corriedale and Merino.
